SUMMARY:Practical Software Carpentries@MIT: Introduction to Git/GitHub
DESCRIPTION:Software Carpentries aims to help researchers get their work
done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research
computing skills. This hands-on introductory workshop will cover basic
concepts and tools. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and
to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.\n\nThis
workshop will cover an introduction to Git and GitHub for version control.
Version control is the lab notebook of the digital world: it’s what
professionals use to keep track of what they’ve done and to collaborate
with other people. Every large software development project relies on it\,
and most programmers use it for their small jobs as well. And it isn’t
just for software: books\, papers\, small data sets\, and anything that
changes over time or needs to be shared can and should be stored in a
version control system.\n\nNo prior knowledge is required\; this workshop
is geared for complete beginners.\n\nThis event takes place in person on
the MIT campus over three days\, from 10am to 4pm\, in 45-801 (Schwarzman
College of Computing).\n\nThis workshop is part of a three day series on
practical software carpentry. Register for 1\, 2 or all 3 days. Please go
to each workshop to register for it separately:\n\n\n	Tuesday\, Jan 14:
Introduction to Unix Shell\n	Wednesday\, Jan 15: Introduction to
 Git/GitHub\n	Thursday\, Jan 16: Introduction to Python \n\n\nFor more
advanced topics in computing\, look for the other Practical Computing
workshops during IAP.\n\nImportant: After registering please follow the
setup instructions on our website and download the Bash shell\, a text
editor\, Git and GitHub desktop ahead of time.\n\nThe Carpentries workshops
have a code of conduct.\n\nRegistration is open to MIT affiliates\; non-MIT
affiliates can register starting December 23.\n\nThis workshop is
co-sponsored by MIT Libraries and MIT Schwarzman College of Computing.
